Interlibrary Loan Policy

The purpose of Interlibrary Loan is to obtain materials for patrons that are not available at the PLACC, and to loan materials found at the PLACC to other libraries.

ILL services are provided to all PLACC registered borrowers whose borrowing privilege is in good standing. Requests for ILL may be made in person, by telephone, or by electronic means to the Reference Department. A separate form must be used for each title requested.

Adequate information to properly identify the requested title must be given to the person taking the ILL request (author, title, edition, etc.).  In order to request an article from a periodical, the title of the journal, date and page numbers (if possible) as well as the title of the article will be required. It is also helpful to provide the source of the journal citation whenever possible.

The Library will normally absorb the cost of returning ILL items to the lending library unless unusual charges are imposed by that library (insurance, etc.). The person requesting the ILL is responsible for paying these unusual charges and will be informed beforehand. Photocopies are assessed a per-page charge unless a flat rate is assessed by the lending library.  Patrons must assume responsibility for all fines and late fees. If items are lost or damaged, the patron is expected to pay whatever charge is assessed by the lending library and their library card will be billed for such costs.

Materials that may be borrowed:

A loan or copy or any material may be requested from another library, but the lending library will decide in each case whether or not to loan an item.

Materials that may not be borrowed:

  • Newly published materials
  • Old, rare or valuable materials
  • Reference or genealogical materials
  • Fragile materials such as microfilm, audio and video materials, photographs, maps, etc.
  • Entire issues of a periodical
  • Materials in high demand—books based on current movies, bestsellers, etc.
  • Multi volume sets
  • Multiple copies of a title for a class or group use

Patron will be notified by mail or email when the ILL material has arrived at the PLACC. Items are held for seven (7) days before being returned to the lending library

The circulation period is two (2) weeks. Patrons who need to renew a title should contact the Reference Department. Requests for renewal must be made before items are due or overdue. The lending library will determine if the material can be renewed.

ILL privilege will be suspended for those who abuse the service by repeatedly failing to pick up items, fail to return items on time, fail to pay fines/fees and fail to return borrowed items (even if they pay for them).
